Deep Dive: CBD for Arthritis—2023 Research Review

This Deep Dive serves two roles: First as a homework assignment for the Cannabis Foundation: Part 1 course and second as part of Higher Learning's Deep Dive Subscription.


For Deep Dive subscribers: This Deep Dive serves as a research review involving eight scientific investigations on this topic. This article is a living document that is updated regularly based on the release of new research about CBD for arthritis.


For students of Cannabis Foundation: Part 1, welcome to the third homework assignment for Module 3: Cannabinoids 1 > Lesson 5: CBD. This assignment teaches students the latest peer-reviewed scientific research about the potential medicinal efficacy of CBD for arthritis. Students will review eight research studies conducted between 2000 and 2022 about CBD for arthritis.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), arthritis is a disease that affects nearly 55 million Americans, or about one in four adults (including 300,000 children). More than sixty varieties of arthritis exist, including lupus, bursitis, gout, fibromyalgia, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.


The CDC predicts that by the year 2040, "an estimated 78.4 million (26 percent of the projected total adult population) adults aged 18 years and older will have doctor-diagnosed arthritis."
