Core Cannabis Course: THCV

Welcome to homework assignment CCC 1.21 of the Core Cannabis Course from Higher Learning LV. This assignment teaches students about the minor cannabinoid THCV. This cannabinoid is closely related to delta-8 and delta-9 THC and is the varin version of that molecule. Like many varin and varin acidic precursor cannabinoids, there is little peer-reviewed scientific research about this cannabinoid. Students will later in this course learn about the acidic precursor to THCV, THCVA.

What is THCV?

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is the result of THCVA, the varin-specific acidic precursor for this cannabinoid (varin acidic precursors are covered later in this course). First discovered in 1971, THCV it is a peculiar cannabinoid for which considerably less research has been conducted than for its chemical cousin delta-9 THC. While most research studies label it non-psychoactive, many users claim that THCV features a biphasic response curve that


The most notable characteristic of THCV is that it causes a decrease in appetite. This goes counter to the popular stigma that marijuana, overall, increases appetite, causing the colloquial munchies. This reputation is true for delta-9 THC, but the very slight molecular differences between it and THCV produce polar opposite efficacy in terms of appetite stimulation.
