Understanding Nanoemulsion Delivery Forms

This article is brought to you by the new Higher Learning LV Core Cannabis course. Learn the 25 most important cannabinoids and eight most common terpenes for an affordable enrollment fee of only $240.

Nanoemulsion Delivery Forms

Nanoemulsions are liquid solutions packaged as tinctures, infused beverages, eye drops, topicals (creams, lotions, and balms), or transdermal patches containing nanoparticles. They are designed to circumvent the lengthy process of digestion by the stomach and liver, with the overall goal of improving their bioavailability.

How are nanoemulsified liquids delivered?

Methods of creating nanoemulsions include sonication (the use of ultrasonic sound) and high-pressure homogenization. Nanoemulsions produce significantly greater overall bioavailability, including faster onset and enhanced potency. This is true not only when nanoemulsions are eaten, but also when they are consumed sublingually or via transdermal patches. Both of these consumption avenues pump cannabinoids directly into one's bloodstream, bypassing the relatively lengthy digestion process of the stomach and liver.

Nanoemulsion Delivery Forms Study

Nanoemulsion Delivery Forms. An April 2015 study entitled "Nanoemulsion: An Advanced Mode of Drug Delivery System" that was published in the journal 3 Biotech explored the "formulation, method of preparation, characterization techniques, evaluation parameters, and various applications of nanoemulsion."

The study reported that nanoemulsions "are manufactured for improving the delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients," adding that the process involves a "thermodynamically stable isotropic system in which two immiscible liquids are mixed to form a single phase by means of an emulsifying agent."

Is the future nanoemulsified?

One significant advantage of nanoemulsified formulations is improved stability. This makes them of significant interest to wellness professionals because they can increase the precision of dosing. This is of importance for many conditions and compounds that feature biphasic response curves or other peculiarities that can be exploited by a lack of stability.

The study reported that, as a drug delivery system, nanoemulsified formulation and medicine "enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the drug and minimize adverse effect and toxic reactions." The research noted that major areas in which nanoemulsified medicines are employed include liver enzyme replacement therapy, cancer treatment, and vaccination.

Did You Know?

The cannabis genome produces 100+ cannabinoids, 150+ terpenes, and 20 flavonoids.

These phytomolecules interact with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) to produce wellness.

But it gets complex. Biphasic response curves, biosynthetic pathways, and acidic precursors all commingle. Subscribe to learn how.
