Review: New Brand Origyn Extracts Goes Solventless

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

In cannabis-friendly Las Vegas, the home of Higher Learning LV, quality concentrates can be found in nearly every licensed dispensary. For marijuana companies that operate successfully in Vegas, offering a premium product is a monumental challenge. Those wanting to stand out must go the proverbial extra mile in terms of the quality of their plants and the overall process involved in extracting desirable concentrates from them.

When we learned about the new Origyn Extracts brand, we knew we had to try it for ourselves. Cannabis companies offering extract and concentrate products, to rise above the fray, must rethink the way in which they produce concentrates from the ground up. After all, modern cannabis consumers are picky. The volume of competition in markets like Florida, Nevada, and New Jersey means that amateur efforts at producing premium extracts are dead from the start.

Origyn Extracts: Obsessed with Purity

Origyn Extracts, a fresh brand from Ayr Wellness, seeks to check all the boxes coveted by cannabis consumers who love to dab concentrate or add it to their smoked loose-leaf flower. Here's their secret: A solvent-free extraction process involving only premium task-focused genetics and a full-spectrum formulation resulting from an ice water soak, a delicately modulated live rosin press, and an innovative multi-week cold cure.

The Origyn team understands the engineering mantra "garbage in, garbage out" based on the company's intense focus on using only choice genetics.

Apparently the Origyn team understands the engineering mantra "garbage in, garbage out" based on the company's intense focus on using only choice genetics paired with a craft approach to cultivation and a meticulous cure process. This results in what the company calls Cold Cure Live Rosin Badder. Our hands-on testing revealed that this product is deserving of such a grandiose title.

In a world dominated by white label products and cannabis companies with little or no real understanding of the ingredients in their products, Origyn Extracts stands out. The brand is fully vertical, working with only its own genetics and cultivars—all of which have been hand-selected for their ability to produce a range of premium-quality concentrates, including live rosin.

"Origyn freezes freshly harvested cannabis plants for a minimum of 24 hours in an effort to protect and separate the precious trichome glands."

Origyn is obsessive about quality, but seems resolute in its refusal to cut corners. It flash freezes freshly harvested cannabis plants for a minimum of 24 hours in an effort to protect and separate the precious trichome glands that populate mature female plants and produce all of the cannabinoids and terpenes sought by consumers.

Pure Water, Cold Cure

Origyn begins with purpose-selected cannabis genetics that it cultivates in-house, allowing the plants to grow to full term to ensure the optimal ripeness of the trichome glands. Its solvent-free process involves soaking freshly harvested cannabis flower in special ice made from reverse osmosis, a filtration technology that produces water that is about as pure and clean as possible.

Because it is a solvent-free process, live rosin delivers the healthiest dab possible, with none of the taste-tarnishing and health-reducing residual solvents found in many concentrate products. While some companies market based on how effectively they purge the solvents from their concentrates, solventless products such as those from Origyn Extracts are never tainted by solvent in the first place.

The company claims that it is targeting cannabis concentrate connoisseurs "who crave clean, solventless, specialty products that leverage innovative genetics and the purest, superior traits of the plant." If our review samples are any indication, Origyn seems to have played by its own rules.

Go Ahead, Smoke It

The purity of Origyn's Cold Cure Live Rosin Badder, the particular product we sampled, is significant enough that it can be smoked as a topping on loose-leaf flower. Most concentrates are not clean enough to motivate cannabis smokers to add them to their bongs and joints out of a desire to prevent massive coughing fits and an unpleasant experience. Origyn's Live Rosin Badder, however, added only flavor and potency to our loose-leaf bowls.

Origyn's brand statement is "better from the beginning." Now that we've gotten firsthand experience with the product and dropped it into our dab rig, we agree.

The magic of Origyn Live Rosin Badder is not greater potency or a few extra terpenes tossed in to prop up aroma. This concentrate achieves uncommon quality through an intense focus on purity that begins with the selection and refinement of genetics best suited for the particular application of squeezing delicious live rosin from premium flowers.

Readers who approach this review with cynacism are forgiven. Until actually dropping one of Origyn's concentrate products into a dab rig or topping a bowl of flower with it, it's impossible to grasp the subtle, yet pronounced ways in which this product stands out.

Like a fast car, beautiful jewelry, or rare wine, Origyn products allow cannabis consumers to delight in the experience, with full confidence that the details have been attended to by some really smart (and quality obsessed) cannabis experts.

But don't take our word for it. Readers in Arizona, Massachusetts, and Nevada, where Origyn Extracts products are currently available, are encouraged to take us to task and see for themselves. Origyn Extracts products will be introduced to the Florida medical market in Q1 2023 and in other major markets—including New Jersey—later in 2023.

We think those who try it will agree that Origyn helps define a new premium standard for American cannabis concentrates.
